Tips for Buying Used Engines

Buying used engines can be tricky and tedious but the process is simplified with these 8 invaluable tips.
  1. Know the specifications of the engine being sought and accept nothing less. Accepting anything less may result in the engine being an incorrect fit for your vehicle.
  2. Do your research. Find out all you need to know about used engines before you purchase any. This is a very easy way for dealers to scam inexperienced buyers.
  3. Before you buy an engine do a thorough history or VIN check on it. These are available anywhere used engines are sold in abundance and are extremely necessary for the customer to know exactly what they are getting.
  4. Search for an engine that has the lowest mileage possible. Engines with many miles do not perform at their best and can turn out to be money pits in terms of maintenance. Once the VIN check comes back in your favor a low mileage engine with fairly good quality is your best bet.
  5. Ensure that the engine comes with a warranty. A minimum 6 month warranty is placed on many used engines and that should suffice except some used engines can be very expensive and six months is not a wide enough time frame to properly assess their performance. Though the warranty is good it is also recommended that the buyer opt to upgrade it to at least one year. This gives you somewhat of a cushion of protection as many used engines can be costly.
  6. Do not buy engines from one off sellers. It is hard to get an accurate history of the engine and you truly do not know what you are getting.
  7. Search through your local classified for salvage yard sales but only go to the sales if they have the specific engine you are looking for. This will save you a lot of time.
  8. Buy online. Buying online offers a wider variety and it gives the customer as much time as they need to make a purchasing decision. Ensure that you buy from reputable and recommended sites. Ask friends who have already bought engines online to help you. Remember some deals are in fact too good to be true.
Navigating the arena of used engines can be tricky. It is very easy to be scammed if you do not know what to look for or the right questions to ask. Ensure that your research is thoroughly done and follow the aforementioned tips so that you can get the best possible outcome.
